Welcome to this week’s ‘Two For Tuesday’, a weekly blog post hosted by myself, The Reading Nook, where each week I pick a bookish topic and discuss two of my favourite (or least favourite) things about that topic! If you feel like joining in, feel free to use the above picture, and don’t forget to link back in the post so everyone can see!
This week’s topic is: Two male characters you’d love to go for a coffee and a chat with.
Last week I spoke about the two female characters I would like to do this with, so this week it’s the guy’s turn. I found this one a bit easier, these two jumped into my head and wouldn’t leave!
-Cecil Avery from The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne. Cecil was adopted at birth by the Avery family, a well off but distant Irish couple from Dublin. Growing up as a gay man in and un-accepting Ireland meant life was difficult for Cecil, and he moved away for a long time before eventually returning home and reconciling with his family. I’d like to sit with Cecil and ask him how he feels about the attitudes in Ireland today, and ask him if he feels more accepted now, especially since people are more openly gay, now that gay marriage is finally legal, or does he feel that there is a veiled sense of homophobia still lurking beneath the surface? How did he make it through a childhood that was lacking in warmth, and love? I feel like Cecil would be a man to learn from.
-Harry Potter from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. I know, I know, it’s a huge jump from Cecil Avery to Harry Potter, but come on, who would pass up the opportunity to sit and speak with mr wizard himself? Plus, you know he’d be magicing up some free refills. He’s been through a lot though – losing his parents early on in a vicious attack, living with a family that hate him, losing friends and loved ones, and having one of the world’s most evil and powerful wizards trying to kill him. He would definitely be a great coffee partner!
Do you agree with my choices this week? Who would you pick?
