January Wrap Up

I’m quite pleased with the books I read in January – while I enjoyed some of them more than others, there are none of them that I disliked or regret spending time with. If I had to chose my favourite, I think it would be A Man Called Ove. It took me a little bit longer than usual to get through it, but it was a fantastic book.

Skin Deep – Liz Nugent

People have been going crazy for this book this year so I knew I had to get my hands on it, just to see if it lived up the the hype. I am happy to say that it really, really does.

Skin Deep introduces us to Delia, a child who lives with her mother, father and younger brothers on the remote island of Inishcrann, off the coast of Mayo. Isolated from the mainland by the ocean between them, and further isolated from the island by her father, Delia is besotted with her father, who dotes on her, and tells her that she is the queen of the island and that there is nobody like her.

A Small Dark Quiet – Miranda Gold

This is a difficult book for me to review because I’m not entirely sure what I thought or how I felt about it. I found it difficult to get through, but there were also times that I couldn’t put it down. 

A Small Dark Quiet tells the story of Arthur, a Jewish boy adopted from Germany by Sylvie and Gerald, a young married couple in England.

Leaving Time – Jodi Picoult

Jodi Picoult’s ‘Leaving Time’ introduces us to Jenna Metcalf, a 13 year old girl who lives with her grandmother in New England. Her life is dedicated to finding out what happened to her mother, Alice, in a tragic accident ten years before at the elephant sanctuary Jenna used to live at with her parents, and the sanctuary workers, Gideon, his wife Grace, and Grace’s mother Nevvie. Alice was taken to hospital the night of the accident, and by the next morning, she was missing, leaving her young daughter and husband behind.
